Winter 2018-2019 may be cold and subject to heavy snow and Nor’easter storms in Nyack.

New York should see colder-than-average temperatures driven by the warm water El Nino weather pattern in the Pacific. The last three winters have all been driven by the colder La Nina. The difference is El Nino tends to pull the jet stream southwards bringing Arctic air with it. Add to this a NOA pattern over Greenland which drives heavy snow and nor’easters. A  NOA pattern developed over Greenland last March and we all know how much digging out we had to do only 8 short months ago.

There is a small bright spot in this dire forecast. They are predicting a frigid Early December, then milder weather around the holidays, with freezing air returning in January straight through to March.

Winter 2017-2018 was considered one of the longest winters in memory. Winter 2015-2016 was the Lower 48's warmest December-February period in 121 years. So we have had the GOOD and BAD over the past 3 years. It certainly sounds like this winter will be the UGLY, especially the 2019 part.

January 22, 2016 saw Winter Storm Jonas dump a record 27 inches of snow on our lovely village of Nyack, let’s hope we don’t break that record.Image title
