A little over a year ago, the span connecting Tarrytown with Nyack opened for traffic. Now, the estimate is for the 2nd span to open by mid-September. This, of course, depends on the weather cooperating. The opening date is based on a project update released on Monday (August 27th).

The new bridge is expected to improve traffic flow and bring with it expanded economic potential for the region.

When the 3.1-mile twin-span is completed, there will be eight general traffic lanes, four breakdown and emergency lanes, space for a future bus rapid transit and commuter rail, a shared-use bicycle and walking path, cashless tolling and energy-efficient LED lighting.

After 20 years (the length of time I've lived in Nyack and traveled across the Tappan Zee Bridge), I am looking forward to traveling across the bridge when oncoming traffic will have its own span.  YAY!!!
