After all the hoopla, Tappan awoke this morning to the sounds of Irene picking up her skirts and traipsing northward. She left behind a fair number of branches and leaves on the ground, as well as some trees that were toppled over, but the greatest impact could be seen in the flooding of the Sparkill Creek that winds its way through Tappan, Sparkill and Piermont on its way to the Hudson. The small creek bed just couldn't handle the huge amount of rain water dumped by Irene- more water than I've seen in the forty two years that I've been living here. What I find ironic, and I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet, is that Irene means "peace" in Greek.
