Craigslist Rental Scammers Are Back
A friend brought a Craigslist ad for a rental in West Nyack to my attention earlier this week. It was a very long ad, with few details on the property, calling out the fact that the For Sale sign in the front yard is from an old listing and that the interested party should NOT contact that agent. The ad went on, stating that it was not possible to view the inside of the house before paying the $800/month rent + $900 security deposit and providing all the information that would be needed to steal someone's identity (the ad didn't state it that way, of course) up front and THEN the keys and lease would be provided to the tenant. In this market, $800/month would barely get a tenant into a studio apartment, let alone a 3 bedroom home.
Anyway, when I looked up the address in MLS, sure enough, it is a home that is listed for sale (and the scammer had even stolen the verbiage directly from the listing.) My friend had already reported the ad to Craigslist. I let the listing agent know about the fraud that was going on and he reported it to the police.
My advice, be very cautious when renting via Craigslist. If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. If the "landlord" is requiring too much information and refusing a viewing of the property prior to signing the lease, run away!
